Chemistry

It may be possible to study this course on a part-time basis.
This course provides a broad introduction to the three main areas of Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic, Physical) as well as covering the key concepts of Chemistry such as structures of compounds and how and why they react. Over the two years students will also develop their practical skills including planning and carrying out their own experiments. Students will need to complete a significant amount of private study over the two years.
Entry requirements are normally:
- Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include 1 relevant equivalent) to include: – English Language or First Language Welsh, Maths and/or Science dependent upon the AS subjects chosen. Additionally, learners will be required to have a minimum GCSE grade B in the subject or related subject.
- Each application considered on individual merit
- Entry is subject to interview
- Must include GCSE Science grade BB or GCSE Chemistry grade B and GCSE Math grade B.

AS Level
Unit 1 – 20% of qualification
- The Language of Chemistry, Structure of Matter and Simple
- Reactions
- Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes (80 marks)
- A range of short answer, structured and extended response questions.
Unit 2 – 20% of qualification
- Energy, Rate and Chemistry of Carbon Compounds
- Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes (80 marks)
- A range of short answer, structured and extended response questions.
A Level (the above plus a further 3 units)
A2
Unit 3 – 25% of qualification
- Physical and Inorganic Chemistry
- Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes (80 marks)
- A range of short answer, structured and extended response questions.
Unit 4 – 25% of qualification
- Organic Chemistry and Analysis
- Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes (80 marks)
- A range of short answer, structured and extended response questions.
Unit 5 – 10% of qualification
- Practical (60 marks)
- This unit comprises two tasks:
- Experimental Task (30 marks)
- Practical Methods and Analysis Task (30 marks)
- Essential skills (embedded in main programme)
- Weekly tutorials
