The top 3 inspirational online places for creative students

2nd May 2018 Posted by: Student World Online

IF you're a law student you can study past cases, if you're a medical student you can consult journals. But what if you're a creative student looking for inspiration?

Of course, you could study work by masters in their crafts - but imagine that everyone in your class read the same books, and produced work which looked similar.

If you want to stand out, one of the best ways to ensure you're as close to the cutting edge as possible is to keep up with the huge range of blogs for creatives online.

This way, you'll get to keep up with the sort of work that's getting attention, and perhaps build a more individual style in your work.

The Design Blog

This blog focuses on getting the latest work by younger designers making cutting-edge work in front of the public.

As you would expect, the design of the blog itself is outstanding, easy on the eye yet functional.

The content isn't frivolous, either. One of the lesser-highlighted parts of The Design Blog which is an absolute jewel is to be found in the Resources section, which lists suggested places for designers to visit for low-cost and free elements to upscale their own designs.

Founded by designer Ena 'Ruby' Bacanovic in 2011 and developed by Jen Yuan, this blog is ideal for students who want to see where the world of design is heading and make sure they are always staying on top with the fresh inspiration they can take to their own work.

Every day of the week, the blog posts fresh info for designers and new work to inspire readers.

Everything from Web Design to Advertising is covered, which means you can cross the normal boundaries to see ideas from other areas and adopt them into your own work.

HOW Design

The sheer amount of information kept online here by HOW Design is hugely valuable for designers of any level.

Perhaps it's due to the fact that HOW Design has been around in print and online since 1985 that there's just so much information and expertise.

Designers have access not only to competitions, but also online courses -  some of which are certificated.

HOW Design certainly takes its industry role very seriously: "it’s our mission to serve the business, creativity and technology needs of graphic designers."

They've even expanded into live events through HOW Design Live, which they say is " the biggest and best gathering of creative professionals anywhere!"

HOW Design has also added an online HOW Design University, too, where readers can get involved in courses to improve their skills.

Juxtapoz

Juxtapoz is surely a contender to be considered one of the coolest and most influential sites on culture in general, and not just for creatives.

But that doesn't mean that the info and inspiration you find here isn't excellent: like the other two online places for inspiration mentioned here, it still has plenty of useful resources too.

The coverage of the absolute cutting edge is spread across different areas: from painting and photography to street art and design.

What makes the Juxtapoz approach so easy to dive into is the fact that the photography and writing together make the site look less intimidating to those just starting out in bringing their creative vision to fruition.

One of the major strengths of the Juxtapoz approach is that they have really taken to multimedia storytelling, too: they have actually branched out into visual storytelling to launch Juxtapoz TV.

But you'll still find all the things you'd expect from a top site, too: exhibition reviews, interviews and focuses on particular artists and designers.
