The QS Top Student City Might Surprise You...

9th March 2017 Posted by: Maddie Broxup

SO, you’ve decided that you want to start the journey into adulthood by heading to university, but the only question still on your mind is where? Why not step out of your comfort zone and spread your wings a little. From London to Melbourne, the QS Best Student Cities 2017 has looked at university cities around the world and ranked them based on aspects such as culture, student opinion, inclusiveness and multiculturalism. If you’re looking for a great student experience, you might consider this list to find your ideal home. So have a look at what each one has to offer – the world is your oyster, after all!

1. Montreal

According to QS, Montreal in Canada boasts the top position of the world’s best student city, knocking Paris off the top spot for the first time in four years. There are several universities here, including McGill University and the Université de Montréal, both hailing students from around 150 different countries. This French-speaking city (but also English, so don’t worry) is known for being extremely multicultural and has an extremely laidback lifestyle, not to mention its iconic smoked meat sandwiches (4 inches of goodness, apparently!). The climate here is continental, with warm hot summers and cold snowy winters, so you’d better pack for all weathers…

2. Paris

Ah, the city of love. If you’re looking for another half to share your university experience with then maybe Paris is the place to be. If not, it can offer many alternatives, such as iconic buildings and exquisite restaurants. Home to 18 universities, Paris holds more world-leading institutions than almost any other city, which is definitely something to brag about. Get lost in the Louvre, scale the Eiffel Tower or experience the Arc de Triomphe. Paris has multiple selling points, though these are just a few.

3. London

If you fancy experiencing the British patriotism that us Brits pose, then maybe London is for you. Home to University College London and Imperial College London (ranking 7th and 9th in QS University Rankings 2016-2017) among others, London is full of vibrancy and the hustle and bustle of work life. It is the centre of finance, nightlife and diversity – although in terms of affordability, QS ranked London 105th. If London sounds right up your street, I highly recommend a trip to the Tower of London to experience the medieval castle that houses the Crown Jewels.

4. Seoul

Seoul is the capital of South Korea and you might be surprised to know that Seoul National University is ranked 35th in the world. According to Top Universities, Seoul is a 24/7 city, and apparently never sleeps. It is home to many Buddhist temples and historic city walls, boasting picturesque landscapes and tranquility. Oh, and girls, shop ‘til you drop in Myeongdong, which is apparently every make up lover’s dream.

5. Melbourne

Australia’s cultural capital is home to 7 universities, with University of Melbourne ranked the highest the QS list at 42nd in the world. There is always something going on in Melbourne, be it arts, comedy, music, film or fashion, so you definitely won’t be bored! Students also ranked this city as 15th for student experience, reinforcing the likelihood of settling in well and enjoying what Melbourne has to offer. For the beach buffs amongst you, Melbourne is the city to be in, with its popular swimming spots at St Kilda and Elwood to other ones further out at Sandringham, Mordialloc and Hampton. Remember to pack your swimwear!
