My first week at Edinburgh Napier University

18th July 2017 Posted by: Dilson Neto - Edinburgh Napier University

MY first week at Edinburgh Napier University was very interesting. I had my induction, which is when the Programme Leader and the staff present the course and the activities the students will do throughout the year. I was happy to confirm that the course plan was exactly as it was on the University website and that the lecturers were always open to suggestions. It was also good to meet the other students in my class. I enjoyed a lot my first weeks of classes. Of course, we had a lot of stuff to do, including a big amount of reading and writing short film scripts. I created a big portfolio of short films in my first trimester and one of the most positive aspects of it was that we discussed our scripts in groups. So, not only did we receive feedback from our tutors, but also from our classmates. One of my main reasons to come to Napier was that I wanted to meet other international students. I was glad to see that many people came from different places, including Mexico, Canada and various countries in Europe.

As it was Freshers' Week, so there were many events organised by ENSA, the student union, and by the sports clubs and societies. I have always been terrible at sports, but the number of different options at Napier caught my attention and I decided to go on some trial sessions. The first one was Archery and it was so fun that I decided to go again for the next session. I didn't hit the target at all, but then nobody did, so we were all equally terrible.

On the following day, I decided to try Kayaking. Not only did I sink my own kayak on the Union Canal, but I also managed to sink the one next to me (and I am really sorry for the girl who was in it - I hope she can forgive me). Soaking in the cold Scottish water, I realised that kayak might not be for me. Archery, on the other hand, proved to be as fun as it was on the first day. After the trial sessions, I decided to join the club and it was one of the best decisions I made during my stay here. The people in our group are fun, respectful and eager to help each other. I really felt like I was part of a team. Soon, I started going to competitions, sometimes even travelling to other cities.

Even though I had lots of things going on at the same time, I was able to balance course activities, archery training and trips around Scotland and northern England. My first trimester at Napier was exactly what I wanted it to be: challenging and fun at the same time.
