Scholarships for Mexican Students in the USA

SCHOLARSHIPS are not only helpful financial tools for university students studying abroad, they are also ways that universities attract a diversity of students and professors from all over the world and encourage bridge building between nations. For students of Mexican or Hispanic heritage wanting to study in America, there are a number of scholarships available that can help break down barriers and set you up for success. Deadlines are fast approaching, so learn about these scholarships and get your applications started as soon as possible.

Hispanic-Latina-Business

ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America) Annual Scholarship Program

This is for students of Hispanic heritage who are legal permanent residents or citizens of the US and there are a total of 13 different prizes, with values ranging from $2,500 through to $10,000.  Each scholarship has different qualification criteria, but applicants must have at least a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 out of 4.0. Only students who have already been accepted to Community College or a four-year, full-time university programme are eligible.

Since the scholarships are offered by ALPFA in partnership with five major consulting firms (like KPMG and PWC) your major must be in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Information Technology, or another business-related field in order to apply. For most of the scholarships, you must be entering your sophomore, junior or senior year of your undergraduate studies or studying for a Master’s degree. There is also a women’s scholarship limited to female applicants. The only other caveat – you must also be a paid ALPFA member in good standing (which currently costs $30 annually).

Gates Millennium Scholars – Scholarship Program

These scholarships are for Hispanic, African-American, Alaska/American Indian Natives or Asian-Pacific Islander American high school seniors or GED applicants. Applicants must be citizens in the US, nationals, or be legal permanent residents and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. Applicants are required to meet a minimum GPA, be enrolled in an eligible institution and are also evaluated on academic achievement, community service and leadership potential.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program awards these scholarships in order to increase the representation of minorities in subjects such as computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. Scholarships are not set amounts, but rather, students selected as Gates Millennium Scholars will receive an amount based on individual financial situation. There is a potential for the scholarship to be renewed annually if full-time enrollment and satisfactory academic performance is maintained.

The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation (ASSEF) – Occupational Safety, Health and the Environment Scholarships

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) offers a scholarship (Rixio Medina & Associates Hispanics in Safety Scholarship) in an occupational safety, health and the environment to Hispanic students who are English-Spanish bilingual. You must have at least a GPA of 3.0 (for undergraduates) or 3.5 (for graduates) and you must have attained at least 60 semester hours of undergraduate credits (24 if you seek to complete a two-year associate’s degree).

Non-US citizens can apply for this scholarship and while ASSE membership is not required in order to receive the scholarship, in many cases members of ASSE are prioritised as applicants. It might be wise to invest the $15 annual fee to join the society to increase your chances of receiving the $4,000 prize.

Hispanic-Latina-Business

The Actuarial Foundation – Scholarship Program

The Actuarial Foundation offers scholarships for minority students each year – in 2016, they rewarded 63 Foundation scholarships for students with Black/African American, Hispanic, Native North American and Pacific Islander heritage. The scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $9,000, are only awarded to the successful applicants whose studies, which must be at a U.S. accredited educational institution, may lead to an actuarial profession. Applicants will only be considered if they have a minimum 3.0 GPA, with particular focus on math or actuarial courses, and a requirement of a minimum ACT math score of 28 or SAT math score of 600 for entering college freshmen.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF)

The HSF Scholarship is designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a college degree. Scholarships, ranging from $500 to $5,000 based on merit, are available to high school seniors, undergraduate students, community college students wanting to transfer to four-year universities and graduate students. To be eligible, students must be of Hispanic Heritage, have a minimum of 3.0 GPA (2.5 for College and Graduate Students) and be U.S. Citizen, Permanent Legal Resident, DACA or an Eligible Non-Citizen. They must plan to enroll Full-Time in an accredited, not-for-profit, 4-year university, or graduate school, during the fall/autumn of a scholarship cycle (year). Applicants may also have to complete a financial aid application.

¡Adelante! U.S. Education Leadership Fund

The ¡Adelante! U.S. Education Leadership Fund is a non-profit, leadership development organisation dedicated to supporting Hispanic college students. They have a variety of scholarships available, ranging in value from $1,000 to $3,000. Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria, however, all students must be able to attend Adelante's National Leadership Institute in San Antonio (Texas), which is a requirement for winning the award.
