VIDEO: How to Get a Part-Time Job While Studying in the UK

16th September 2014 Posted by: Student World Online

PAKISTANI student Usman Fiaz has got a part-time job in a pharmacy while doing his master's in public health at the University of the West of England in Bristol.

Watch his guide on how to get part-time work as an international student in the UK, or read his main points below.

1. Get your National Insurance Number
This is a number unique to you to help your employer pay your National Insurance contributions. Your university will be able to help you apply for this.

2. Get your CV up to date
Every uni has an career advice centre that can help you with this, for example by providing CV templates.

3. Send a cover letter
Don't just send out the same CV to all employers. Include a letter explaining why you are right for that particular job and, if necessary, modify your CV to better target that employer.

4. Apply to a lot of different employers
It can be hard as a student to get a part-time job in your chosen field. So try to look for a job, not the job. Apply to lots of places.

5. Pay
The average UK part-time job pays between £6.70 and £8.50 an hour.
