Study in New York State: A Guide for International Students

It may not be the capital of the US but New York certainly has a unique allure all of its own. Considered as one of the most interesting and enabling study destinations in the world, it is little wonder that New York is a top choice for many foreign students. University level education is separated into two bodies - state or city systems. The SUNY (State University of New York) system includes four university centres, namely the University of Albany, Binghamton University, University at Buffalo and Stony Brook University as well as over 50 technical, community and undergraduate colleges and universities. The CUNY (City University of New York) incorporates a 24 campus system that serves students across the five boroughs of New York City.

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
New York University welcomes international students from all over the world, with foreign students making up 16% of the students on the New York campus; the university is an institution that prides itself on diversity. All applications are completed online and prospective international students may be required to submit proof of English language proficiency such as TOEFL, IELTS or PTE academic results, as well as proof of appropriate diplomas. Financial aid may be available for first year students but applicants will be expected to outline how they propose to finance the full duration of their studies.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
The University of Columbia is situated in Upper Manhattan, New York City. It is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the State of New York and has a reputation for scholarly excellence. The University comprises undergraduate, graduate, non-degree programmes and the American Language Programme, Columbia’s internationally recognized Programme for the study of English as a second language.

UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO
Founded in 1846, the University at Buffalo is a premier public university and a flagship institution in the State University of New York System. It is the largest and most comprehensive campus in the SUNY system, offering more than 100 undergraduate degrees and 205 masters degrees, it is easy to understand why this is such a popular destination for international students. As well as excellent academic instruction across the board, Buffalo also offers English language courses tailored specifically for foreign students. Other courses at Buffalo favoured by international students include computer science, computer engineering and civil engineering.

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
The University at Albany, State of New York has made the international student application process uncomplicated and informative, with the option of applying to Albany as a freshman or as a transfer applicant you will be joined on campus by students from no less than 90 nations across the globe. Albany is proud of its international relations and encourages applicants from all cultural backgrounds. Recent reports show that Albany has proved a preferred study destination for students from Canada, China, India, South Korea and Taiwan. In terms of courses Albany’s intensive English courses rank high with foreign students. Academic subjects of interest include accounting, biochemistry & molecular biology, computer science & applied mathematics and financial market regulation.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
Syracuse University, New York offers international students an attractive campus and exciting destination to focus on achieving academic success. When foreign students arrive at Syracuse a special orientation programme is put in place to help students adjust to life on the university campus as well as the U.S in general. There are opportunities to participate in events organized specifically for foreign students, where international students are encouraged to meet and support one another in their academic journeys. Trends show that intensive and advanced English courses at Syracuse are extremely popular with international students, just as they are at most universities. The most popular major subjects for foreign students include economics, bioengineering and chemical engineering.

METROPOLITAN COLLEGE OF NEW YORK
Formerly known as the Audrey Cohen College, the Metropolitan College of New York is located in Manhattan, New York City. The Metropolitan prides itself on a diverse selection of students from over 40 countries and continues to offer international students a wide range of accredited undergraduate and graduate majors. A recent survey suggests that international students studying here are favouring majors in the areas of business administration, financial services and public affairs.
