Marketing Degrees in Denmark: Tips and Tricks

13th February 2017 Posted by: Michael Mares

AFTER I finished high school, I decided to move to Denmark and study a Marketing degree for a couple of reasons. Number one was the university I chose, VIA University in Horsens, which had a better rating than any in my home country of Slovakia. Number two: I knew that I needed to start living my own life! And the sooner you start, the better, in my opinion. This included moving on my own, taking care of myself, looking for a job, doing taxes etc. This all showed me what being an adult really means, once you are out in the world alone.

Attending University in Demark showed Michael what being an adult really means.

Two Years for a Degree

Requirements to get into university in Denmark are generally not very high. However, most universities conduct early semester tests that are meant to filter the students. My tip is to start studying very hard from the beginning, and choose your university wisely.

Marketing degrees in Denmark start with an Academy Profession (AP) degree, which is given after 2 years of study. An AP degree combines theory and practice, and includes a 3 month internship, which I am taking right now in Sri Lanka. This degree will prove to employers that you understand the basics of international marketing, market positioning, branding, economics and statistics. With this degree, you can find work in a marketing company, and you could do all the fundamental marketing analysis for the company.

After the AP degree, you can continue to a bachelor’s degree.

Continuing to a Bachelor’s

A bachelor’s degree continues from the end of an AP and last a further three semesters. It will teach you more about the economy – in depth – and again, the last semester requires you to take a mandatory internship, either in Denmark or abroad. This means that by the time you finish your bachelor’s, you have 9 months of professional internships on your CV.  This experience means that a bachelor’s degree will allow you to manage a team of marketers, conduct larger marketing campaigns. After your bachelor’s, you can certainly find a better paid job with more responsibilities.

Some of the most famous universities that offer a bachelor’s degree in Denmark are Copenhagen Business School, Aarhus University, Copenhagen Business Academy or VIA University College Horsens. These universities have a very good ranking and provide their students with outstanding opportunities.

Beyond a Bachelor’s

Once you are finished with the bachelor’s, you might think it is the time to go on to find a master’s degree that fits you. But wait, is it really? The time after a bachelor’s could be the time, when you take your gap year. What you’ll do is up to you, but I would suggest you find a job, get some savings, and set up a network.

In the professional world, nothing is more important than having friends in the right place; and university is the best place to build your international network. Be friendly and sociable, try to make as many good friends as possible and try to be there for them when they need you. People don’t forget – both good things and bad. Keeping in touch can be hard sometimes, but sometimes a simple Facebook conversation can keep you connected with people for years. And after university, that is what really counts.
