January 2018: start your postgraduate studies in Europe’s capital

27th October 2017 Posted by: Duncan Chisholm - Editor

INTERNATIONAL students can now start studying towards a degree in January each year. We look at some of the myriad of career options open to London students in the capital of Europe, and where you can start your studies in January 2018 in order to take those world-beating opportunities.

London is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, a major financial centre and the unofficial capital of Europe. The city's population of 8.8 million people have access to one of the most diverse choices of urban cultures, one of the strongest arts and entertainment scenes and some of the best education available in the world.

MSc Finance and Accounting - The Claude Littner Business School

The Claude Littner Business School offers a Masters course which covers everything from corporate financial management, corporate responsibility and corporate strategy to a practical auditing module to prepare students for career opportunities after completing the course.

It's clearly a huge advantage that you'd be studying in London, which serves and Europe's undisputed financial hub and ranks alongside New York, Singapore and Hong Kong from a global perspective. All of the world's major accountancy firms and investment banks operate in London, choosing the UK capital over its nearest European rival Frankfurt.

Having completed the course you should look forward to a career leading you to opportunities as a financial controller, senior auditor, financial analyst or senior accountant. It makes sense for those with a broader and more ambitious outlook to study accountancy, too, because approximately 25% of the current CEOs controlling FTSE 100 companies are qualified accountants which shows just how solid a foundation accountancy and a thorough understanding of finance can be.

Former student Karishma Sheth said the support of the academic staff gave her confidence "I feel like nothing is impossible and you can do it with the help of the staff and lecturers. I would definitely recommend UWL to prospective students because it has a really good teaching team and they are all supportive and approachable."

MA Music Industry Management and Artist Development

The London College of Music offers an enviable platform for any student hoping to become a live music event manager, artist manager or independent record label owner. The reality is that artists' ability to pick the right management is absolutely central to their future success. Management could mean anything from helping the artist to set up their own record label, to helping the artists maintain their health during gruelling tours.

The MA course offered here covers Copyright Law, Live Event Management and Independent Label Management. Students are encouraged to develop their entrepreneurial skills to equip them in mastering the music business, and their leadership skills to cope with the psychological factors which could affect their artists' success in a business where creative burnout and performance anxiety are daily realities.

The School was voted the number one university for modern music in London by the National Student Survey 2017

Former students at the London School of Music have won work placements and internships at Virgin Records and EMI and in terms of career opportunities, the course could open doors to promotion, public relations and creative management.

MSc Cyber Security with Internship

The School of Computing and Engineering offers potential postgraduates the opportunity to start building a career in January 2018 within an industry which many may have noticed is now growing at an astonishing rate. Governments' and corporations' voracious appetites for more and more of consumers' data has created a huge opportunity for those with cyber-security, or InfoSec, skillsets.

Governments and corporations such as banks are responsible for huge amounts of personal data which needs to be protected. One of the best ways of protecting data is to use other data to map threats to the security of our personal details. So both sets of data are growing at exponential rates, meaning more and more people are needed to help manage and protect us. As a result, demand for new talent in the InfoSec industry is now snowballing and looks like it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.

Large corporations with deep pockets are now paying cyber-security specialists extremely well, to the point where the basic salaries of InfoSec specialists are beginning to bear serious comparison with corporate lawyers and investment bankers.

The School of Computing and Engineering course covers the fundamental principles of cyber-security, security management and network and systems security but students can also opt to further their knowledge in specific areas such as Distributed Application Development and Data Architecture.

Potential employers include anti-virus providers such as McAfee and Symantec, network vendors such as Cisco, service providers such as Amazon and broader-based consultancies such as KPMG and IBM

MA Advertising, Branding and Communication

The London School of Film, Media and Design offers prospective postgraduate students looking to start in January 2018 a chance to build their career in an industry which employs 80,000 people in London alone. Over the last 20 years, advertising, branding and communication have been made increasingly sophisticated by new technology and social media.London online advertising hub AdSneeze agrees: "Much has changed in the advertising world since the days when two prime time TV adverts were sufficient to reach 80 percent of the market. Nowadays, reaching such percentage of the population is simply impossible by using a single channel."

The course encourages students to embrace that new level of sophistication while also getting used to working industry hours and a real-world industry pace.

Masters student Laura Bakalka is positive about the environment students will experience: "I am approaching my third month of the course, and I am still as enthusiastic today, as I first was when I joined the MA programme. Unlike many universities, UWL warmly welcomes newcomers, providing endless engaging events, trips, support, not to mention the mind-blowing workshops!"
