Game of Thrones Series 7 Round Up and Predictions for Series 8

16th September 2017 Posted by: Student World Online

As quickly as it came, it was gone – Game of Thrones’ (GOT) is on hold for another year and this time it’s left us wanting more than ever before. Season 7 had all the action we’ve been waiting for yet it departed from the traditional blood and nudity rhetoric seen previously. Instead, magic and dragons took centre stage as we draw closer and closer to the final season and the end of half a decade of encapsulating entertainment.

In true Game of Thrones fashion, we are no closer to predicting the outcome - will the white walkers (and a white dragon?) destroy mankind or will Dany, Jon and the living prevail? Here are a few highlights from season 7, plus some questions it raised.

Jon & Danearys

In Season 7 we finally had confirmation that Jon and Daenerys are related. Rhaegar Targaryan had his marriage annulled to Elia Martell which allowed him to marry Lyanna Stark in a secret ceremony. Lyanna then secretly gave birth to his Rhaegar’s baby - Aegon Targaryen aka Jon Snow, and rightful heir to the Iron Throne. In turn, we find out that Daenerys is Jon Snow’s (or Aegon’s) aunt.

This, coupled with Jon’s romantic moment with the dragon allows us to solidly predict that the King in the North is the second dragon rider. But this still leaves one space open; is the Night King the third dragon rider? Is Bran? Is Tryion? The final scene in which Tryion is lurking in the dark watching Jon and Daenerys consummate their love (in true GOT incestuous style) begs the question of how much Tyrion really knows about the family ties.

The wall is broken!

For pretty much the whole series, we built ourselves up for what we hoped to be an epic battle between the crows and the white walkers. How wrong were we? In classic Game of Thrones style, the wall is destroyed by an ice dragon in a matter of minutes and the white walkers stroll through as if the wall had never been there.  What chance has Westeros (let alone Winterfell) got against such a force? The future looks bleak.

Little Finger is finally dead

Little Finger is, without doubt, the slimiest, most scheming, backstabbing little worm of a man who twists people’s minds and manipulates their weaknesses to gain further power – after all, chaos is a ladder. However, his death was brilliant and somewhat deserving. In an ironic twist of events, his plan to turn the Stark sisters against each other fails, and he ends up on his knees begging for his life. Karma finally catches up to Little Finger and his shrewd reign of whispers comes to an end when Arya slits his throat, confirming that the Stark girls are now a formidable force to be reckoned with.

Unfortunately, we may have to wait as long as early 2019 for the final series to be released but I think fans worldwide would agree; it’s going to be worth the wait.
