A Degree from Swansea Gives Great Return on Investment

1st May 2017 Posted by: Francesca Turauskis

WHEN searching for a university, cost is at the forefront of many prospective student’s minds. The cost of a course can be the deciding factor in choosing where in the world to study. But it is always worth looking beyond the price-tag of the education itself, and looking at what you get for your investment.

A new study in the UK has ranked universities based on the returns graduates can expect to achieve versus their overall investment in a degree. Expert Market has looked at aspects such as tuition fees, accommodation costs and general cost of living (such as the price of a local pint, a very important factor for many students!) and cross-referenced it with the income and opportunities that students are likely to achieve after graduation. The result is a good judge of the return on investment (ROI).

When ranked in this way, Swansea University in Wales is looking like a good option. It falls in the Top 10 universities in the UK overall, and second in Wales. Affordable and good graduate prospects? Time to sign up to Swansea!

So what makes Swansea University affordable?

  1. Swansea has the second cheapest student accommodation in the UK. The cost of private renting is a mere £80-90 a week.  Halls of residence start at just £85 per week for a standard room, and include all bills, such as broadband, gas and electricity. The only thing you’ll have to think about is a TV license if you want to watch programmes on live TV. (It’s worth it for the Welsh-language programmes to give you a true taste of Wales!)
  1. Fancy buying a pint of beer for less than £3? How about a cup of coffee for £2.50? These are the average prices in Swansea. According to cost-of-living tools such as Expatitstan and Numbeo, Swansea is 33% cheaper to live in than London, and beats Cardiff on some sections.

  1. Swansea University has up to £1.5 million worth of scholarships specifically for international students and these are available for residents of many countries around the world.  What’s more, the amount offered is often very generous: most scholarships on offer will grant at least £1000 to those eligible and up to £6000 for high achievers, with some (such as the Eira Francis Davies Scholarship) offering a full tuition fee scholarship. Read more about Swansea’s scholarships and contact the International Development Office to see what could be available for you.
  1. The Money@CampusLife team at Swansea are an award-winning team who can help with all money related issues. The team won the Financial Capability Engagement Award 2016 and from helping prospective students to providing interactive Financial Capability Modules, they are there to help you make the most of your money whilst studying.

And what do you get in return for this investment?

  1. When you study at Swansea, you’ll be studying at the Welsh University of the Year, as seen in the prestigious Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017. It knocked Cardiff University off the top-spot this year.
  1. The Times and Sunday Times also ranked Swansea as a top 20 university in the UK for graduate prospects.

  1. Swansea is 14th in the UK and number 1 in Wales for graduates getting professional level jobs. In the 2013/14 survey “what do graduates do?” (looking at where people were 6 months after graduating from their first degree) 82% of Swansea graduates were in professional level jobs.
  1. As a university with 5-Stars for excellence in the global QS Stars quality assessment, Swansea is in the company of notable institutions such as Oxford and Harvard.
  1. It is in the Top 200 universities in the world for international students, according to the QS World Rankings. This is in fact 71 places higher than it was 2 years ago – so studying at Swansea now means you are joining a university that is getting better all the time.
