13 Scholarships for Nigerian Students

1st June 2016 Posted by: Ruben Asencio

IF you are from Nigeria and you are looking for scholarships to study abroad, you are in the right place! Both companies and universities around the world often offer scholarships to Nigerian students, helping you study your degree for less.

University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield offers a series of scholarships for Nigerian students, depending on the type of degree or studies you would like to take part in. For example, undergraduate students could benefit from undergraduate scholarships if they are starting their studies in the faculties of Arts, Science, Engineering, or in the School of Law.

Moreover, if you are intending to study Management in the University of Sheffield, you could benefit from a £2,000 tuition fee discount per year. This is awarded automatically and unconditionally in the first year of study, and awarded in the successive years depending on whether you have achieved at least a 60% average mark in the previous year. You can be eligible for this scholarship as either a full or part-time student, as long as you are from or permanently living in Nigeria, and have an offer to study from the University (and, of course, you should not be already funded by any other body).

The same requirements and tuition fee discount apply for the Social Science scholarship, which covers courses like East Asian Studies, Town and Regional Planning, Geography, Education, Information, Journalism, Politics, Sociological Studies, Economics, or Geography.

If you have been a good student during your school years, you could also apply for their Merit Scholarships (there are only two!) which are based on academic merit, based on all the requirements above, but with a 50% tuition fee reduction. The same reduction could be applied for those three Advanced Placement undergraduate students who apply for the scholarship with the same name. Other scholarships, such as the Shared Commonwealth Scholarships, may also be available to you.

If you wish to find out about the scholarships for Nigerian students that the University of Sheffield offers, you can find all the information here.

University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham has a few scholarships for you if you are a Nigerian student. For example, there is a scholarship with the Petroleum Technology Development Fund for Nigerian students to travel overseas to study a postgraduate course in an area relevant to the Oil, Gas, and Solid Minerals industry. There is also a Lagos State Scholarship Board scholarship for Nigerian students (undergraduate or postgraduate) in the areas of technology, medicine, languages and environmental sciences. Or the NNPC/ESSO scholarship for those Nigerian graduates who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree in Geosciences or Engineering (either Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical, Sub-Sea, Marine or Electrical). Other scholarships from this university are the ones from the Commonwealth, the Chevening or the DFID Shared scholarship. You can find the information about them here.

Newcastle University

Newcastle University has four scholarships to offer to Nigerian students, but with a £5,000 tuition fee discount for the first year only, whether it is for an undergraduate or for a postgraduate degree. To be considered, you must be permanently domiciled or a national of Nigeria, hold a conditional or unconditional offer to study at Newcastle University, and be self-funded. Additionally, if you are applying for the undergraduate scholarship, you must have completed your previous qualifications at a Nigerian institution. If, on the other hand, you would like to apply for a postgraduate scholarship, of which there are three, you should have achieved, at least, a second class upper degree from a recognised Nigerian university.

Shell

It is not only universities that offer scholarships to Nigerian students. Shell, one of the biggest companies in the world, also has funding available for those Nigerian students who apply. In a joint venture between Shell, NNPC, Elf and Agip, the undergraduate scholarship supports Nigerian students who wish to study in a Nigerian university. Every year, more than 4,000 students complete their aptitude tests, and the applicants are shortlisted based on the results of the SSCE and JAMB examinations. Only first year students are eligible for these awards, which fall into two categories: either the National Merit award, for Nigerian undergraduates, or the Area of Operation Merit award, from students in the communities where Shell Nigeria operates.

Moreover, Shell Nigeria offers yearly ten postgraduate scholarships for one of the following universities: Imperial College London, University College London, and the University of Leeds. The scholarship covers tuition fees, a return flight ticket from Nigeria to the UK and living expenses. This SPDC Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme is offered for applicants from the Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states, and for courses that are relevant to the oil and gas industry. The applicants should be between 21-28 years old, have a good level of English, reside currently in Nigeria, return and take permanent residence in Nigeria after completing his or her studies, and have obtained a university degree equivalent to a UK Second Upper Class or higher. You can find all the information about it here.

As you can see, there are plenty of scholarships for you if you are a Nigerian student. If you would like to apply for a scholarship you should look at the links above. But hurry, most of these are advertised for a start in late 2016 and their deadlines are approaching!
