10 things international students need to know about Switzerland

HAVE you thought about studying in Switzerland? Here is all you need to know about the country from Swiss student, Nathalie.

1. Don’t forget to change your money!

In Switzerland, we have a different currency to most countries in Europe. We use Francs. In notes, there are 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1000, and coins of 5, 2, 1, 0.50, 0.20, 0.10, 0.05. Cards are used as well as cash, but some money doesn't get used much such as the 1000 note and the 0.05 coin.

2. The country is expensive

When you come to Switzerland from another country, the cost of living looks really expensive and it isn’t wrong. The life in this amazing country is expensive but the salaries are also high. Salary and cost of living goes together. Some good tips when you come to study in Switzerland are that you share a flat and find a small job. In that way you will also meet new people.

3. It is multilingual

The country has four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. People don’t speak all these four languages but most of them speak a minimum of two as well as English. English is spoken by most of the population. Languages are impotant in Switzerland so you won’t have problem to speak with them as English is international.

4. It is important to be punctual

Switzerland is famous for their watch all around the world, but Swiss people don’t only wear it but also use it correctly. Most of the population don’t like to be late and all infrastructures like trains won’t be late. So don’t be late!

5. Sundays are important

In much of Europe, you will have the shops and everything open on Sunday but not in Switzerland. This day is sacred. Everything is closed and no one works. You can take the opportunity to do what you like. So don’t forget to buy what you need on Saturday and enjoy your Sunday.

6. There is good public transport

Switzerland can be visited by public transport without big difficulties. You can go nearly everywhere on public transport. All big lines are with trains and then you can have buses. To reach places in the mountains, there are also buses or sometimes rack railway.

7. You can drink the tap water

The country has a lot of water between the mountains, the rivers and the lakes therefore you can easily drink tap water. The water is cleaned before you can drink it. The product will be free in most of the restaurant and the water is really good. It doesn’t have a strange taste as in many countries. Don’t be afraid to drink the tap water.

8. Recycling is important

Environment is becoming always more important all around the world therefore in Switzerland, recycling is really important. There is everywhere bins with different parts. Nature needs also to be clean so after the ski season associations go and clean the pastures.

9. Switzerland has a nice climate

The country has snow and cold temperatures during the winter but it is not extreme and it is beautiful to see the snow falling. In the summer, the weather is pleasant with warm temperatures and sunny so you can do activities and enjoy the lake or river. During the year, the four seasons can be easily seen through nature and the weather.

10. A coffee in Zürich is the most expensive in the world

Zurich is an expensive city for everyone and it is in this city that the most expensive in the world can be drunk. It cost around CHF 3.65, it means USD 3.65. The coffee needs to be enjoyable!
