My experience of an internship in the UK

23rd November 2017 Posted by: Student World Online

Yes, here I am in the last week of my internship in Bristol at Student World Online. Perhaps a short introduction would help. I’m Chris Heckmann, 21 years old and living in the beautiful city Lübeck near to Hamburg in Germany. As part of my training I had the opportunity to do an internship in Bristol. For three weeks I'll be living in a host family and working for a company located in England. "This will be a great chance for me,” I thought, and it has been!

Bristol turned out to one of my favourite cities I’ve ever visited, apart from the weather. There are so many different places in the city which I would recommend to everyone, coming here for the first time.

First, it’s important for every food lover, to get a clue about the opportunities to satisfy their needs. Therefore the St. Nicholas Market is the place to be in Bristol. No matter whether you want some Chicken Fajita Wraps, Burgers, or just Falafel with salad and Humus, everything can be found at this awesome market. It is based very centrally near to the Victoria Street. Of course, there are many street food and options around the city. You can find delicious food at every corner, but the “Food Market” is very special and nice to see.

In my opinion, the Harbourside is a good idea for a night out in Bristol. There are a lot of very cheap pubs, where you can have a lot of fun together with your friends. It’s a[Office1]  very interesting phenomenon that a few pubs turn into a nightclub at 10 pm. So, you have your dinner in one of these restaurants and spend the whole night in it with drinks and music.

Perhaps I’m not the biggest fan of sightseeing. However, some monuments are a must see in Bristol, when you’re visiting for the first time. My favourite is the stunning view from the Cabot Tower, where you have an overview of the whole city.

Compared to my hometown Bristol is much bigger, but you can reach everything easily by bus (when it arrives). At that point, I would mention a negative fact about Bristol, the buses. No matter whether you want to drive to work early in the morning, or the last bus in the night going home. Almost every bus has a delay. Some days the weather is sunny in the UK, too. So, you can go for a walk through the city. Everything in the centre can be reached on foot and the city is just gorgeous!

I just have 3 more days of work, so I can slowly conclude my thoughts on my internship. I think it has influenced my life positively for the future. The communication with foreign people has become easier. At the beginning of this journey, it was a big fear that I’m too shy to speak English with native speakers, but this fear has gone after three weeks.

Bristol is always a good idea and an internship. Go for it!
